Louisville's Own Seafood Lady
A woman in Louisville Kentucky only known as the "Seafood Lady" is taking her business to the next level. After moving to Kentucky, Nichelle Thurston wanted to give people a taste of Florida style seafood. She began nursing school and a little later decided to take the last $1,500 of her savings to start selling seafood out of her house. "It was all just on a whim," Nichelle Thurston said. She used recipes passed down to her from her grandfather, who was a grand chef in the Navy and it worked out better than she, or her husband, Luke Thurston, expected. "Getting off work and see 200 or 300 people standing on your porch waiting for your wife's seafood,” Luke Thurston said. “I mean, I can't tell you the feeling, man."
After two months, she moved to a food truck and four months after that opened up her restaurant on West Oak Street. Her only restaurant experience was working in a Church’s Chicken and Steak ‘n Shake. "This is my first time actually running a full-scale restaurant,” Nichelle Thurston said. “I think I've been doing pretty good at it." Her secret weapon is social media. From posting pictures of her food, she's gained more than 20,000 followers on Instagram and more than 15,000 on Facebook. "If it wasn't for social media, I don't know if we would be where we are today,” she said. “Between Facebook and Instagram, that's my customer base. Her fans range from University of Louisville athletes to even Muhammad Ali, whose family has ordered delivery.
She and her husband said besides social media, they thank God. "She said, ‘Baby, one day God is going to bless me and we're going to make it someway somehow,’ and it was with the crab legs and the shrimp," Luke Thurston said. The Seafood Lady hopes to one day be as big as Red Lobster.
The Seafood Lady - 617 W Oak ST Louisville KY
Hours: Wednesday and Friday 12:00pm - 9:30pm & Saturday: 2:00pm - 9:30pm
When arriving at The Seafood Lady's new restaurant for the first time you might be surprised to walk up and find a line out the door & no where to sit, however most will tell you it is more than worth the wait. Big daddy and I decided to order the Full Combo Platter and a side of crab fries. The plate is constructed with 1 lb of Snow-crab, 1/2 lb of shrimp, corn on the cob, a potato, sausage, and a hard boiled egg. Now I am always in search of a good scampi sauce and this one is the BOMB! That being said I am a very picky person so I wasn't enthusiastic that the sauce is also poured over the side items along with the seafood. I was also not prepared when I saw the shrimp I ordered still had the shell and hadn't been deveined. So I didn't partake in the plate we bought. Big daddy loved the crab fries, he gobbled them right up! They have many more specialty items to partake in like fish, crawdads, fried lobster, lobster tails, Mexican corn & pineapples bowls!
Verdict? The total cost for our meal with tip was $40. Did I eat forty bucks worth of food no, but it was great to come out and support local business! We will be back to try more seafood!
The Seafood Lady is prime example of entrepreneurial spirit and stamina! I have a feeling she will go the distance!
Until next time. - D💋
