Dark Skin Tones & Skin Cancer: What You Need To Know

People who have dark skin tones often believe they’re not at risk for skin cancer, but that is a dangerous misconception, says dermatologist Maritza I. Perez, MD, a senior vice president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. Lack of knowledge and a belief that dark skin protects against skin cancer are among the barriers preventing minority, uninsured, and immigrant populations from adopting methods for skin cancer prevention.

The rate of skin cancer diagnosis is rising in minority populations. “Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of race,” she says. While incidence of melanoma is higher in the Caucasian population, a July 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed it is more deadly in people of color. African American patients were most likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in its later stages than any other group in the study, and they also had the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate.

Most skin cancers are associated with ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or from tanning beds, says Dr. Perez. Yes, darker skin produces more of the pigment called melanin that does help protect skin — but only to a certain extent. People of color can still get sunburned, and they can also develop skin cancer from UV damage.

It’s of concern that 63 percent of African American participants in a survey said they never used sunscreen. This needs to change, says Dr. Perez. “Remember, ethnicity does not define skin type. It can represent a wide range of skin tones with a wide range of risks.” To avoid premature aging and damage that can lead to skin cancer, everyone should use sunscreen every day and practice sun-safe habits, such as seeking shade and wearing protective clothing, hats and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Additionally, certain skin cancers are caused by factors other than UV — such as genetics or environmental influences — and may occur on parts of the body rarely exposed to the sun. For example, people who have dark skin are more susceptible to acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), an especially dangerous form of melanoma that typically appears on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. (The Jamaican singer and musician Bob Marley died of ALM when he was only 36.)

People who have dark skin are more susceptible to acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), like these examples above.

It’s crucial to detect skin cancer early, when it is easiest to treat and most likely to be cured. Dr. Perez says she advises people of all ethnicities to do a monthly skin self-exam and see a dermatologist annually — and sooner if any of the warning signs appear:

People who have dark skin are more susceptible to acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), like these examples above.

  • A bump, patch, sore or growth that bleeds, oozes, crusts, doesn’t heal or lasts longer than a month. This may indicate basal cell carcinoma.
  • An ulcer, scaly red patch, wart-like growth or sore that sometimes crusts or bleeds could be a sign of squamous cell carcinoma. This type of skin cancer can also develop in old scars or areas of previous physical trauma or inflammation.
  • New or existing moles that are asymmetrical, have an irregular border, more than one color, are larger than a pencil eraser or change in any way may indicate melanoma. Pay special attention to suspicious spots on the hands, soles of the feet or under the nails, which could signify ALM.

Mobella Swim - @MOBELLASWIM REVIEW

If you are a curvy woman like me you know how hard it can be to find a nice swimsuit to accentuate those curves. Likewise if you are a small breasted woman like me it just makes it twice as hard to pick out the right swimsuit. I have tried swimsuits from Victoria's Secret, Hollister, Arie, American Eagle, Walmart, Target, and a whole bunch of stores in between.

Then there came Mobella Swim! I about died after seeing these gorgeous exclusive well designed bikinis! I just knew right then and there that I had to own a FEW! I scoured through the website & instagram to find the perfect design and size for me! On October 8th 2017 I ended up ordering 2 to start out with, the Aztec Off The Shoulder Mesh Knickers 2 Piece for £60.00 and the Rouge Thong 2 Piece for £32.00. Plus shipping cost of £13.99 that brought my total to £105.99 which is roughly $150.

I pulled out my gold card and punched in those numbers as quickly as I possibly could! My transaction went through and I received an email stating mobella had received my order!

That is where the excitement ended. Of course I was ready to have my bikinis in hand the same day, but Mobella does make you aware if takes around 4 weeks for your items to be made as they do not stock product. There is also a disclaimer that during the summer months it could take longer due to high volume of orders. Mobella Swim is a UK based brand and business which I do have experience with ordering and shipping from the UK so I knew shipping may take a week or up to two. I figured 6 weeks would be ample time to receive my order.

6 weeks went by and I still had not received a shipping notification on my order. I emailed and a week later I still hadn't heard anything regarding the inquiry on my order. I wrote the instagram page, I emailed again, and again, and again.

It has now been 10 weeks since I placed my order with no sign of communication from Mobella Swim. I tried to email to cancel my order as instructed on their website. Of course no reply. Finally I opened a dispute through my paypal after 10 weeks of not receiving any shipping notification or updates on my order. I am still waiting on Mobella to reply to my paypal dispute, but judging from their lack of communication I doubt they will, which means paypal will step in and refund my money.

BUYER BEWARE! I will never recommend Mobella Swim to any consumer due to the fraudulent nature of their business practice. Sorry to say Mobella lost a quality customer, I will never shop Mobella Swim ever again.

If you have ordered from Mobella Swim, please comment and let me know about your experience!

EDIT: Below is my purchase order & PP case for validity.

The Non Refundable Deposit MYTH

About a year ago I received an email with some bad news from a client. “Dear Jeff– I just wanted to let you know that Gwen and Peter have called off their engagement and will not be getting married in September. The news comes as quite a shock to us, but Gwen claims it’s for the best and we’ve always trusted her judgment. I apologize for the short notice, but we just found out less than 48 hours ago. I would like to stop by later this week and pick up a refund of our deposit…” There was a bit more after that, but it was just a blur. My attention was focused squarely on four words– “refund of our deposit.” I knew my contract clearly protected my interests with a “non-refundable deposit” clause. I couldn’t relax, though, until I pulled out the contract to make sure everything was in order. Everything was, in fact, exactly as I remembered. Under “Booking Fee, Payment Policy & Expenses,” the contract stated that “the wedding date shall be reserved through payment of one half (50%) of the wedding coverage costs.” More importantly, the “Cancellation” section was quite clear that “If Client cancels the wedding photography for any reason, Guyer Photography shall be entitled to retain the entire amount already paid and no portion shall be refunded.” I typed up a quick reply– first expressing my regrets, then referring Gwen’s mom to the relevant language of the contract. I clicked “send” and went about my day. Things got ugly quickly, and it took about a week to sort things out with the family. It was a real mess. It all boiled down to this– I was right. I knew it. Part of me even suspects that they knew it, too. Unfortunately, though, being right isn’t always enough. We eventually came to an agreement, and I learned a very valuable lesson. There is no such thing as a Non-Refundable Deposit. Let that sink in for a minute.

DEPOSITS AND RETAINERS
Did you notice that the word “deposit” does not actually appear anywhere in the contract language I quoted? There’s a very specific reason for that. In my previous life as an attorney, I dealt with contracts on a daily basis. The thing that a lot of well-intentioned people don’t realize is that it’s not just what you say in a contract, but also how you say it that can be the difference between success and dealing with Gwen’s mom. Why is “deposit” such a dirty word? It’s not, but it doesn’t always mean what you think it means. Time for a quick lesson in contract law. Payment for a service is not earned until the service is performed. Seems pretty straightforward, right? Except for when it’s not. Courts have consistently ruled that money paid to cover advance fees for the performance of a service are not actually earned until the service is performed. Simply put, the money isn’t yours’ until you actually do what you’re being paid to do. So, assuming that my contract with Gwen’s mom clearly stated that I was to provide 14 hours of wedding day coverage, as well as prints, albums, online galleries, etc., any deposit paid in anticipation of those services would not be considered earned until those services were performed. What does that mean? It means that it doesn’t matter how many times my contract says that the deposit is non-refundable, forfeit, gone, or just plain mine. My contractual intent– protecting myself– is meaningless in that situation. If we go to court, the judge is going to rule that the work detailed in the contract has not been done and that I therefore have to return the money. All of it. If the deposit or retainer, however, was paid in order to compensate me for the potential loss caused by Gwen or Peter getting cold feet and cancelling the wedding, then we find ourselves working under a whole new set of rules and assumptions. Under this new scenario, Gwen’s mom has entered into a contract which specifically takes into account my significant loss upon her cancellation. And yes– it is a game of semantics and we are splitting hairs here, but courts like contracts. Better to have a contract that makes you, rather than one that breaks you.

SO, WHAT SHOULD THE CONTRACT ACTUALLY SAY?
As I’ve already pointed out, you have to be very specific about what that advanced payment actually covers. If it is simply the first of multiple payments toward wedding photography, Gwen’s mom wins. If, on the other hand, we list all or part of it as payment against losses caused by cancellation, the money stays right where it is– in my bank account where it belongs. I realized after this fiasco that my contract was better than many I’ve seen, but that it needed some work. It fell just a little bit short of fully doing its job. My new cancellation clause reads like this: “This contract between Guyer Photography and Gwen’s Mom shall not become effective until it is signed and the initial amount due has been paid. At the time the contract takes effect, Guyer Photography shall reserve the date and time agreed upon, and not make any other reservations or accept any other clients for said date and time. For this reason, in the event that Gwen’s Mom cancels the contract for any reason, all monies paid shall be retained by Guyer Photography in order to offset its loss of business.”

CONTRACTS ARE WRITTEN BY LAWYERS FOR A REASON
I don’t recommend lawyers because of our grandiose vocabularies. Even when I was still practicing, I always tried my best to draft contracts in plain, every day, easy-to-understand English. But here, even with all of my training and experience, a crucial bit of contract language slipped right past me. The contract was iron-clad, right up until the moment it wasn’t. It’s also important to note that contract law varies somewhat from state to state, as well as country to country, so checking with someone who knows what they’re talking about in your area is a huge and important step towards getting this right.

OTHER THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
This is not just about wedding photography. It’s about every client and every shoot. Everyone thinks they have a perfectly acceptable reason for cancelling on you at the last minute (especially models). And maybe on occasion they do. I’m not saying you take a hard line with each and every cancellation. You’re running a business and only you can decide what’s right for your business. If returning what’s already been paid is a good business decision, then by all means return it. In my situation, Gwen’s parents have a pretty high profile and know a lot of people. When I stopped to think about the damage that could be done just from them telling their friends about the cold, heartless photographer who wouldn’t return their deposit, I realized that drawing a line in the sand might protect my interests in the short term, but I want to be in business for the long term. I’m a big fan of compassion. I’ve been extremely fortunate to be on the receiving end of it more times than I probably deserve. As a human being, I want to be as understanding and accommodating as I possibly can. If I’ve sounded a bit less than compassionate here it’s for only one reason. Photography feeds my family. It keeps a roof over our heads. Thankfully, I don’t have a very high cancellation rate. Had Gwen’s mom cancelled in enough time for me to book a new client for that date, or if it had been during a month with better cash flow, I would have refunded the full amount on the spot. But with less than three weeks before the wedding, it just wasn’t feasible. In a perfect scenario, doing what’s right for the client and what’s right for our families would always be the same thing. Contracts are there for when they aren’t.

WRAP-UP

Make sure that your interests are fully and adequately protected. All it takes is one bad experience to learn that the non-refundable deposit is nothing but a mythical creature, much like unicorns, leviathans, werewolves, and Bigfoot. But not dragons. Dragons are definitely real. Trust me. I’m a lawyer.

Naked Wardrobe Haul & Review

As you know, or if you are a new reader; as you will come to find, I have a love for the basics every woman should. Clothes, shoes, and makeup are always at the top of my MUST BUY list. For a few months now, I’ve been eyeing new fall fashion up, down, and horizontally. Let me tell you, just like with my EGO Shoes Review, I knew when I saw this brand on the Kardashian's, Aaliyah Jay, and every other gorgeous woman I follow on IG, I had to be dressed in the latest fashions from Naked Wardrobe

Three sisters from Los Angeles, California have come together to take the fashion world by storm, and rather affordably! What started as an idea, has morphed into the ultimate go-to place for fashion savvy women all around the world. Naked Wardrobe is an contemporary clothing boutique created with the intention of celebrating women of all shapes and sizes that provides fabulous fashion, and the latest trends at an affordable price point. They design and produce in limited quantities to ensure that the styles are exclusive, and individualized for each client.

I actually made 2 separate purchases because I wanted to see how they would treat a small order as well as a large on. From trolling their IG & FB, it doesn't look like they ever offer discount codes but they DO frequently offer free shipping, which i received on both orders although I couldn't tell you why, they don't include a reason for free shipping on either the email or paper receipt..

Delivered - Friday, October 7th

Even though this order took a few days to get a shipping notification, I am still very pleased. Since two of the items were on sale, (having worked for BeBe) I know those items had to be searched for among the other sale items. So a week start to finish on 6 items, is very quick! Oh my boss would tell me to add on "in my opinion" to the end of that sentence... its a liberal thing, you wouldn't understand. LOL.

A nice tip and trick I have noticed is that if you wait a month or two their items will go on clearance for less than half the original price! Be warned, their smaller sizes tend to sell out soon, so if you’re in love with a dress, know that it may sell out if you dont grab it when you see it!

As far as the packaging, I must admit I was skeptically impressed. The package comes in a black shipping bag with the words “naked wardrobe” on it.

Inside is the items are delicately wrapped up in tissue paper, and accompanied by your purchase order.
Once unwrapped, you can find a "Thank You" card.

The quality of the fabric is superb, as well the stitching/seams. Overall you are sure to love each and every addition to your Wardrobe from this retailer!

Image result for but wait meme

So unfortunately the "Jazzed Up In My Joggers" were just too tight around my waist, so they are being shipped off to return. The material was very nice and they were very cute just too small. The elastic waist band was cutting me in half, know what I'm sayinnnn! But good news is I get to blog about the return process & my experience! Just for quick reference, I am going to post the return policy below and link it HERE. *This is referencing domestic US orders ONLY*

RETURNS:
Your package must be shipped using a trackable, insured shipping method, as "we cannot accept responsibility for packages we do not ship." Nakedwardrobe.com states "You will receive an email once your return has been processed. Please allow 7-14 business days from the time we receive your return for it to be processed."

  • Merchandise must be returned within 15 days.
  • Merchandise must not be worn, altered, or washed.
  • Merchandise must have all tags attached.
  • Please note original shipping charges are Not Refundable.
  • All Items purchased on Sale, Hair Accessories, Intimates, Bodysuits, and Swimwear, and ALL shoes are FINAL SALE.

Return Shipped & Accepted by USPS - Monday, October 17th
USPS Delivery Notification: Wednesday, October 19th
Acceptance Email by Naked Wardrobe - NEVER

*So after reading the return policy I was skeptical of how seamlessly this process would go. Sure enough here it is October 26th and I never even got an email letting me know they physically received the package and would begin processing it. I took it upon myself to message the help desk and fb page today regarding my return. This was the response I got, which does NOT answer my questions stated in my email to them; "Hi Danielle, Please allow up to 10-14 business days for your return to be processed from the day we receive it." Ok that sure solves my problems, thanks.... not. But literally minutes after I received this email, another email came through from PayPal stating a refund for my item had been initiated. So I got my refund but all in all the customer service is lacking.

Return Initiated - Wednesday, October 26th
Return Processed by Bank - Wednesday, October 26th

Harry Potter Makeup Brushes - A Muggle Must Have!

With the upcoming release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, muggles everywhere are running rampant with Harry Potter fever! Just a few weeks ago there were these faux palettes to obsess over, then the real Harry Potter-inspired shadows. Now there are Harry Potter makeup brushes shaped like WANDS that look almost too good to be true. Created by Storybook Cosmetics, these Potter-inspired brushes are exquisite with long lustrous handles and intricate detailing that are straight out of the wizarding world.
The initial ramblings of these magical makeup tools came from the Makeup Addiction Reddit forum that shared a teaser of the set. It wasn't long before Potterheads the world over became collectively obsessed, coveting the tools of which we still knew very little about. Over the past few days, Storybook Cosmetics has gradually shared more and more info about their soon-to-be cult classics on their Instagram (while also growing their following from less than 10,000 to a whopping 74.5 thousand just over the weekend).

Since this is a new brand I did a little digging to give you the 4-1-1. The brand is actually the brainchild of sisters Mandy, Missy, and Erin Maynard of Omaha-based company the Geeky Cauldron. They sell all things fandom including jewelry, scarves, and phone cases. So it only makes sense that their next project would be makeup inspired by more geeky things they love.  "As massive fans of all things wizard, this seemed like the obvious step to merge our two loves—fandom and makeup." sister Erin exclaims.
The set includes five brushes, modeled after Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, and Lord Voldemort’s infamous wands (all synthetic with metal alloy handles and cruelty free), that will arrive at your doorstep in a custom velvet pouch for safe keeping. Price point is set at $55 & there isn't an option to purchase singles at this time. Now I know that seems steep for 5 brushes, however Storybook lets us know because they are a start up company the price was set due to the extreme costs of rushing into mass production. "We are a teeny tiny brand new business and unfortunately we don't have the ability to order brand new, custom items, in massive quantities. (allowing for a much bigger production discount)."

  • Wand preview posted Monday 10/10/2016
  • Prototypes approved and officially announced Friday 10/14/2016
  • Presale Consideration Friday 10/14/2016
  • Presale Began Saturday 10/15/2016 11am CST
  • Presale SOLD OUT Monday 10/17/2016 9am

As you can see these brushes have sold out ON PREORDER in merely 2 days! Sorry ya'll, I am just as disappointed I wasn't able to snatch these up, but the brand will be putting in another round of production before the holidays. As of now, the estimated shipping date is December 10 for the preorders, so stay tuned and be on the lookout for the official release and next round of ordering!

What do you think about these magical creations? Comment Below.

Until next time. - D💋

Bitter Lace Beauty Halloween Highlighter Review

You know the pretty pans of rainbow highlighter that broke the Internet (& wallets) a few months back? No, not the $5 product you see in drug stores from Wet 'n' Wild or the newly-released version from Forever 21. We’re talking about the first-to-market original called Rainbow Prism Highlighter by Etsy shop Bitter Lace Beauty.

After fulfilling 6 month back orders for the highly coveted rainbow highlighter, #BLB is back and better! Not only with a glam new site, but also a slew of LIMITED EDITION products with a seasonal flare that are inspired by All Hallows' Eve. Consider these the 2.0 version of their iconic counterpart, the Prism Rainbow Highlighter. And to think, this is just the beginning! So what exactly is so special about these highlighters? I am here to give you the scoop!

I decided to purchase just one, but we will come to that shortly (see below). All of the Limited Edition Halloween Highlighters are 44mm in size and come in a matte black and chrome red compact. If you would like to depot your pretties into a larger palette no problem! They are magnetically attached and pop right out. The liquid highlighter comes in a glass skull bottle with a dropper cap and it contains 30ml of product. Separation is normal so their are mixing balls inside to shake her up when she is feeling low. Not all shades are Vegan but #BLB is a cruelty free brand. They test on humans, not fur babies! Colors will be marked with a (V) for Vegan shades and (NV) for NON Vegan shades in the descriptions below. The store also provides this disclaimer: "Due to the way this product is made, you will get all the colors in your pan throughout the whole product, not just on top. No two pans will be alike... sometimes one or 2 colors dominate at the top of the design." Now there has been some speculation about not wanting to mess up the color blocks in the pan but rest assured the colors will not mix even as you make your way down to the bottom.

SLAY(V) - A white gold flecked base with an intense metallic blood red splatter. Both colors are gorgeous on their own but blend together to make the most beautiful rose toned gold highlight. Slay has larger shimmers that make for a sparkling highlight. The pan is so pretty you might not even want to use it!

TOOTH-ACHE(V) - Stripes of sweet yellow orange and white are gorgeous on their own, but once blended together they make the most beautiful warm gold. Not only does it resemble candy corn in the pan, it also swipes on with similar gusto.

THE NEXT SUPREME(NV) - This color is very interesting, it is a murky silver with a purple to intense green shift. This shade is also extremely iridescent. This shade gets its name from American Horror Story: Coven. It even features an emboss of skulls! I'd say the metal gods would approve.

HOCUS POCUS(NV) - Embossed with a spider web this highlighter features a swirl of rusty orange, lime green, and purple that blend together to make a gorgeous lilac shade. Hocus Pocus has larger shimmers that make for a major metallic punch.

I PUT A SPELL ON YOU(V) - A pearl while base with an extremely iridescent shimmering finish with flecks of gold and purple. This formula has larger shimmers to give a more sparkling glow.

Swatches in order: Slay, Hocus Pocus, Tooth-ache, The Next Supreme, I Put A Spell On You

Can't decide which you love the most!? I know, it is challenging, but not to worry. You can grab the whole set HERE in a special set, if you feel like splurging! Why not make it an early holiday gift? :P

Now onto my Halloween goodies! This is Bitter Lace Beauty's new highlighter in TOOTH-ACHE.

Interested in transferring that candy corn onto your cheek? #BLB suggests to swipe your finger or a flat brush directly across the pan and swipe straight onto your cheek to get the full on sugary effect!

For a more blended look you can use a brush swirled around the pan as you normally would.

ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, tin oxide, iron oxide, copper, silica, sericite mica, calcium carbonate, zinc stearate, boron nitride, kaolin clay, silicon dioxide, allantoin, carnauba wax, caprylic/capric triglyceride, isopropyl myristate, dimethicone, bis-vinyl dimethicone/dimethicone copolymer

Remember "limited edition" means once its gone, its gone for good! So snatch up these treats while you still can!

Until next time. - D💋

EGO Shoes Take 2 - @EGOOFFICIAL Review

If you haven't seen my first review of @EGOOfficial, it's a must read before you continue on with this review... find it HERE. Recently I found the company EGO, while perusing popular instagram accounts. After seeing the new perspex trend, I knew I HAD to have them! However after my first purchase I was reluctant. Not only did I have problems with shipping and customer service, but the shoes themselves are extremely hard to walk in. I wanted to give it another shot so I ordered a pair I thought would be easier to walk in. I chose the Tasha Perspex Clear Ankle Boot, can you say "Hello gorgeous!"

I placed my order the same way on the same day as my first purchase, to give a fair comparison. They were having a sale of 20% off that day so I got an even bigger discount than the normal new subscriber discount of 15% that pops up when you first enter the site. I would like to note, when dealing with customer service before they had used the excuse that my order was actually a pre-order, so I included this confirmation that shows the shoe I order IS available and in stock. I also added a screenshot of the estimated delivery date when I was checking out.

We're a Culture, Not a Costume

As the days get shorter, the smell of bonfires looms, here in the Midwest there is a heavy chill in the air, leaves are changing color, and people are frantically acquiring pumpkin spice anything. Yes, Halloween is quickly approaching!

The older you get, the less you tend to enjoy the holidays but halloween just happens to include fun for the entire family. Though I cosplay (check out my first cosplay), I know I’m not the only one who loves the excuse to dress-up as an adult without anyone staring or mocking at least once a year. It’s fun to pretend to be someone, or something you aren't for a night, and costumes run a gamut as wide as the human imagination. With such a variety of humorous, frightening and even sexy ensembles to choose from, it’s disappointing to see that tired stereotypes, oblivious prejudice, and nonchalant racism still manages to find a way to the store shelves and in the hands of our friends and families.

Last year, Ohio University’s S*T*A*R*S (Students Teaching About Racism in Society) released the incredibly popular “We’re A Culture, Not A Costume” ad campaign showing ethnic minority students holding photos of people dressed up as stereotypes of their culture.

The best way to get rid of stereotypes and racism is to have discussions, raise awareness, and educate others on matters that the public school system will not. The most obvious stereotype is when someone dresses in blackface, because of it historical context, however the message applies to all races and stereotypes, and not just during Halloween. “Halloween as a holiday has a history of being focused on inversion of power,” says professor Susan Scafidi of Fordham University. She is the author of Who Owns Culture: Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law.

Let stop for just a minute to examine, what is cultural appropriation? The most simple definition of cultural appropriation is that it occurs when members of a dominant culture borrow from the cultures of minorities without their input. Typically those doing the exploiting, lack a contextual understanding of what makes the cultural symbols, art forms and modes of expression significant. Despite their ignorance of the ethnic groups from which they borrow, members of the majority culture frequently profit from the exploitation. If you need a better look at that blurred line, head over and read The Difference Between Cultural Exchange and Cultural Appropriation.

People dress up as plenty of powerful figures that don't get misconstrued and that is OK! But when you dress up as a culture that you are currently oppressing, or have subjugated in the past, you’re not inverting anything, you are just further “reinforcing current power structures in an offensive way.” We need to learn to treat people the way that they deserve, the way we want to be treated. If it’s something that [you] have the privilege to wear, where others would not, do not wear it. You should know when you go past the limit, but as we all know there are people in society who don’t know, don't see, or don't care about that limit. If we really begin to examine the subconscious thoughts of our peers and brought them to attention, maybe we can collectively start to stamp out these stereotypes that have been ingrained into american society.

If you are still questioning what kind of message you (as a Caucasian) are sending in relation to cultural appropriation, here is a list to help sum up what we went over:

  • > Don't wear blackface.... EVER. Point blank period. Never ever.
  • > Don't wear a native american headdress... If you were "native american" like many claim, you would know better. Headdresses are a sacred item, built from individual eagle feathers that are earned over time. And to see somebody who hasn’t earned that right adorning themselves as such, it’s completely disrespectful. Just like you don’t get to wear a medal of honor by being born American, you don’t get to wear a headdress even if you have Cherokee in you. Simple as that. If you need more reasons why -> just read But Why Can't I Wear a Hipster Headdress.

That leads into...

  • > Don’t adopt sacred artifacts as accessories.
  • > Don't sexualize minorities.
  • > Cite your cross-cultural influences publicly and often.
  • > Engage with other cultures on more than an aesthetic level.

If you have to question it, don't do it. If you absolutely must come out dressed as such, be prepared to talk about it. It’s easy to say it’s “just a costume,” and at the end of the night, you can take it off. But minorities cannot change who they are, and will continue having to live with the consequences of the subtle, casual hatred your costume spreads.

Until next time. - D💋

Too Faced Peanut Butter and Jelly Palette Review

The Too Faced Peanut Butter & Jelly Eyeshadow Palette is a new Summer 2016 palette featuring 9 shades of eye shadow inspired by the sensation that is the peanut butter shade in their classic Chocolate Bar palette. You'll find the palette focuses more on peanut butter versus jelly as there are only two shades of purple in this palette.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Palette, $36
Where to buy: Sephora – Too Faced – ULTA

The palette is your standard eye shadow collection palette from Too Faced. It comes housed in their classic style tin with a how to guide located inside with three different signature looks using the 9 eye shadows to get you started. Low and behold it does in fact smell like Peanut Butter and chocolate since it is made with cocoa powder! Per the packaging, it contains no nuts so it shouldn’t be a problem for those allergic to peanut nuts.

Shades include:
  • Bananas (soft peachy gold w/ fine gold shimmer)
  • Extra Creamy (matte creamy beige)
  • Jammin’ (dark chocolate w/ golden sparkle)
  • Jelly (vibrant orchid)
  • Nuts About U (matte brown w/ red undertones)
  • Spread the Love (medium peach w/ gold sparkle)
  • Peanut Brittle (metallic burnt orange)
  • Peanut Butter (matte medium orange brown)
  • Peanut Butter Cup (metallic golden bronze w/ gold sparkle)

The palette is made up of shimmer, frost, and matte finishes with fresh and new fun colors. They are beautiful velvety almost creamy textured shades. These are super pigmented and easy to apply. They aren’t too heavy either and didn’t look metallic or overly frosted.

WITH FLASH --------------------------------WITHOUT

All in all the Too Faced Peanut Butter & Jelly eye shadow palette, for me, is an absolute must have and my favorite out of all the other similar palettes. The palette doesn’t seem like a rerun of past shades and it does contain some rather unique ones.
